Primary Data
Data is gathered directly from the source, for example using a survey or from sensor readings
Secondary Data
This is data that already exists, for example from previous research, books, journals, or reports. It could also be data on shopping trends
Questionaire
This comprises a series of questions, usually close-ended with checkbox answer options. Traditional paper formats or electronic questionnaire websites can be used
Interview
This is a focused one-to-one meeting with an individual where an interviewer asks questions. This could be face-to-face, over the phone or online using video conferencing
Focus Group
This type of survey involves a group of people who are invited to take part. The participants answer questions and share ideas by engaging in conversation
Importance of data accuracy
Inaccurate data can be a serious problem for organizations and individuals, as it leads to incorrect decisions being made
Data presentation
Meaningless unless it is presented in a way which allows decision makers to use it to inform their decisions
Trend analysis
Businesses that can identify trends quickly and easily are the ones which stay ahead of the competition
Error reduction
A good user interface helps to reduce errors when data is inputted
Ease of use and accessibility
A user interface needs to make it easy for users to navigate, input data and receive outputs, regardless of disability, such as limited motor function or visual impairment
Intuitiveness
An intuitive user interface allows users to easily work out how to use both the interface and the data it provides without a lot of training
Functionality
The user interface must allow an organization to make use of the data stored in the ways that it requires
Performance and compatibility
A system needs to be able to process the inputs to the user interface and present outputs quickly. Poor performance leads to frustration and reduces productivity
The system needs to be compatible with other systems that either input data into the system or receive outputs from it
