Impact of folding and faulting on the landscape Flashcards
A landform… (which one are you looking at)
created by folding is a fold mountain. I’m looking at munster ridge and valley province.
Folding of rocks happens…
when they are compressed or squeezed due to the collision of plates of the earth.
Rocks…
are uplifted and fold mountains are created. This process is called orogeny.
Over 300m yrs ago…
the old red sandstone rock in Munster was formed and later covered by limestone.
Around 250m yrs ago…
these rocks were compressed during the Armorican folding. The compression came from the north and south so the mountains have an east-west trend. You can travel through the valleys from east to west.
The limestone was eroded…
from the anticlines and so mountains like the comeraghs south of Clonmel are seen as Sandstone.
Limestone is preserved…
In the synclines or valley floors. Eg. Blackwater river.
