Immunopathology Flashcards
1
Q
What is Type 1 Hypersensitivity?
A
Allergic reactions
eg.
- systemic anaphylaxis
- allergy rhinitis (hay fever)
- asthma
- food allergies
2
Q
What is Atopy?
A
High levels of IgE, large numbers of eosinophils, large numbers of IL-4 secreting Th2 cells
3
Q
What are the treatments for allergies?
A
Epinephrine - anaphylaxis, asthma - reforms tight endothelial junctions, relaxes smooth muscle, accelerates HR Inhaled beta-adrenoceptor agonists - asthma - bronchodilator Anti-histamines - hives, allergic rhinitis - bind and block receptors for histamine - reduce itching and decreased oedema
4
Q
What is immunotherapy/desensitisation?
A
Involves administration of increasing doses of allergen to achieve tolerance
5
Q
What is Delayed Type Hypersensitivity Type IV?
A
Cell mediated inflammation due to antigenic persistence, heavy involvement of T cells (and macrophages), classically Th1
