IMMUNOLOGY Flashcards
what does the eye do to compensate for the lack of physical barriers between the eye and outside world
blink reflex
limited exposed surface area
where is there lymphatic drainage in the eye
conjunctiva
what is immune privilege
downregulation of the immune response (inhibition of local immune response AND systemic tolerance of antigen via ACAID)
why is immune privilege important in the eyes
if the get infected its important not to overreact otherwise eye sight may be lost!!!!
what does the anterior chamber do to assist immune privilege
anterior chamber associated immune deviation (ACAID)
what doesnt happen in sympathetic ophthalmia
what does this result in
ACAID
ocular protein enters systemic circulation = autoimmune reaction
in sympathetic ophthalmia, why is the reaction autoimmune
bc the protein is a normal ocular protein, its just not usually in the systemic circulation
which eye is affected in sympathetic ophthalmia (injured eye or other)
both
classic presentation of sympathetic opthalmia (2)
BILATERAL (though trauma/surgery was just in one eye) granulomatous uveitis
floaters in eye
type I hypersensitivity in eyes example (2)
acute allergic conjunctivitis (puffy swollen eyes)
chemosis (oedema/swelling of conjunctiva)
type III hypersensitivity in eyes example (1)
autoimmune corneal melting = corneal perforation
type IV hypersensitivity in eyes example (1)
corneal graft rejection
