immunology Flashcards
What is Type I hypersensitivity reaction? What are examples?
Also called “immediate hypersensitivity.” Occurs after a person has been exposed to allergen and has developed antibodies. Is IgE mediated. Examples include anaphylaxis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.
What is Type IV hypersensitivity reaction? What are examples?
Also called “delayed hypersensitivity.” Requires prior desensitization. Initiated by mononuclear leukocytes–mediated by T cells and monocytes/macrophages rather than by antibodies. Examples include contact dermatitis, allograft rejection, poison ivy, TB test.
What is type II hypersensitivity reaction? What are examples?
Cytotoxic hypersensitivity reactions-example is drug hemolytic anemia
What is type III hypersensitivity reaction? What are examples?
Immune complex-example is serum sickness.
How can you differentiate between Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and meningococcemia?
onset of meningococcemia is generally quicker, within a couple of days versus longer period for RMSF
What is active immunity? How is it acquired?
Resistance developed in respose to an antigen and characterized by an antibody produced by the host–vaccinations
What is passive immunity? How is it acquired?
Immunity coferred by an antibody produced in another host-from mother to baby or through admin of IG
