Immunology Flashcards
What is the difference between the innate and the adaptive immune system?
cells of the innate immune system have no memory, whereas cells of the adaptive immune system do!
What is innate immunity? examples of cells
Cells of innate immune system
Phagocytes, effector cells, antigen-presenting cells
What cells are the first line of defence?
Phagocytes
What are the four steps of phagocytosis
Attachment, ingestion, killing, degradation
What are the cells of the adaptive immune system
Lymphocytes!
B lymphocytes - produced in bone marrow
T lymphocytes - produced by thymus
What are the two types of T cells
CD4 and CD8
what do antibodies recognise?
antigenic epitopes
How do T cells recognise antigens?
Not through antibodies, through a Major Histocompatability Complex (MHC)
What types of MHC are involved in which T cells?
Class I MHC involved in intracellular antigens - CD8
Class II MHC involved in extracellular antigens - CD4
What are cytokines
cell signalling molecules. Aid cell to cell communication. INTERLEUKINS
What are the different CD4 T cell subsets?
Th1, Th2, Treg, Th17
What does IL-4 produce
Th2
What does IL-12 produce
Th-1
