Immunology Flashcards
Immunity
All mechanisms used by the body as protection against environmental agents that are foreign to the body.
Interferons
Proteins made by cells in response to a viral infection, essentially induced a generalize antiviral state in surrounding cells.
Phagocytic cells
Type of white blood cell that engulfs and destroys micros type of macrophages
Reticuloendothelial System (RES)
Major function is to phagocytize micros and foreign substances in the blood stream and tissues
Widely distributed throughout the body
Also functions to destroy old and imperfect cells
Antigen presenting cells (APCs)
Present antigens to T-cells within the adaptive immune system so the T-cells can be activated to generate antigen specific responses.
Pathogen associated molecular pathogen (PAMPS)
Set of microbial molecules with conserved motifs that are associated with pathogen infection that serve as ligand for host pattern recognition molecules.
Inflammation
Normal immunologic process that restores immune homeostasis.
Most of the cells involved to response are phagocytic cells.
Cardinal signs of inflammation
Redness
Edema
Heat
Pain
Cytokines
Proteins involved in cell signaling that cannot cross the lipid bilayer
Infection
Invasion of the body by harmful micros or parasites causing disease.
Four types of infection
Viral
Bacterial
Fungal
Prion
Disease
Any harmful deviation from normal structure or functional state of an organism.
Latency
occurs when a microbe’s persistence in a host produces host damage without perturbing homeostasis sufficiently to cause clinical symptoms or disease.
