what are the LIVE vaccines?
Live vaccine: “BOM VARY”: given SC, except BCG
BCG, OPV, MMR, Varicella, AMV (attenuated measles), Rotavirus,
Yellow Fever
The rest are mostly given IM.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
For IM injections, the choice of site is based on the volume of the injected material and muscle mass
In children younger than 1yr, the anterolateral aspect of the thigh is the preferred site
In children >1yr old, the deltoid muscle is usually large enough for IM injection
The upper, outer aspect of the buttocks should not be used
PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNIZATION
***Most vaccines can be safely and effectively given simultaneously
*use separate syringes and sites
*exception is yellow fever and cholera vaccine (separate by at least 3 weeks)
