Immunity lesson 2 Flashcards
Briefly tabulate the differences with natural and acquired immunity.
Natural immunity is a nonspecific immunity present at birth, it responds to foreign invaders and is very similar from 1 encounter to the next
Acquired immunity is a specific immunity present after birth, it increases in intensity with repeated exposure to the invading agent.
Briefly explain the function of specific/acquired immunity.
When the body is invaded, the non-specific defense acts first, immediately, as 1st and 2nd line of defense and this is called the primary response.
What does the acquired immune system do when an antigen enters the body?
It takes the acquired immune system weeks or months to have produced an immune response that will automatically activate if re-exposed to the disease causing antigen.
What does the wbc/lymphocytes do when an antigen enters the body?
The wbc/lymphocytes will be able to recognize and respond to the antigens. These antigens are usually found in the lymphoid organs : tonsils, spleen, blood and lymph glands.
What are the 2 main types of lymphocytes?
B-lymphocyte (B-cells) = antibody-mediated immunity
T-lymphocyte (T-cells) = cells-mediated immunity
What are the secondary lymphoid organs the mature B & T cells migrate to?
Spleen , Lymph nodes and Tonsils
