Type I Diabetes
aka juvenile, can result from a virus, immune system destroys beta cells

Excessive thirst Increased hunger (especially after eating) Frequent urination Dry mouth Nausea and vomiting Unexplained weight loss Kussmaul breathing

Polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia

- 7 to 6.4 – prediabetes
6. 5 or higher on 2 separate occasions – indicates diabetes
Random blood glucose
200 mg/dL or higher – suggests diabetes
2 hr Post-prandial glucose
140 or less is normal
140 to 199 mg/dL – prediabetes
200 mg/dL or over on 2 separate test - diabetes
Fasting blood glucose
Less than 100 mg/dL – normal
100 to 125 mg/dL – prediabetes
126 mg/dL or higher on 2 separate tests – diabetes
drugs for diabetes
Metformin- improves sensitivity of cells to insulin
Sulfonylureas- Facilitates secretion of insulin
Meglitinides
