Immunity Flashcards
What is a lymphocyte?
A special type of white blood cell that remembers how to make antibodies that fight particular antigens.
What does a vaccine do?
It gives the body a chance to produce antibodies for a weakened pathogen before the real one can do damage.
How does a vaccine work?
A vaccine is the injecting of a weakened pathogen that triggers the body’s immune response without causing harm.
Describe the response of the human body to immunisation.
Immunisation introduces an antigen causing immune response, antibodies and memory lymphocytes are produced so that the body can fight the real pathogen.
Active immunity (vaccination)
The process of exposing the body to an antigen to form antibodies and lymphocytes.
