Immune system part 3 Flashcards
What are the bodies innate defenceses? (5)
barriers Phagocytes Natural killer cells Inflammation fever
What are the bodies adaptive defenceses? (3)
B cells
helper T cells
Cytotoxic T cells
What are forms of the bodies Communication (2)
Cytokines
Antigen presentation
What is a healthy immune system?
a immune system that can fight off infection
Is there a way to tell in your immune system in healthy or not
No, no measurement of observation you can make. Your immune system is considered as a whole and it is hard to tell if it is boosted or depressed
What diseases suppress the immune system?
HIV infects helper T cells so T cell count is way down in AIDS patients
what is more useful than asking a global question about the immune system?
it is productive to study the immune system with respect to a specific disease
What does much research focussed on the immune system focus on?
Surrogate outcomes, but the relevance of these to health is an open question
What are factors that are suspected of known to weaken the immune system? (5)
malnutrition, including fetal malnutrition
shortage of certain minerals
too much work to do
diseases of cells of the immune system
fatigue
What is another study that can be used to research immune systems?
Cohort studies, although they are most expensive and time consuming. you can observe the incidences of a disease after the introduction of a factor or intervention
Diet and the immune system:
Where is it found that people have the weakest immune system?
People suffering from malnutrition and starvation are more prone to infectious diseases then well fed people, BUT the connection might not be direct (water may be contaminated, there may be more infectious diseases around due to poor sanitation)
What are the two issues or concerns surrounding the micronutrients connected to immune systems?
Does deficiency have any normal effect on the immune system?
if someone’s intake is normal, does supplementation provide added strength to their immune system
What have low levels of Selenium been associated with?
Been associated with several cancers
don’t need much of it
What has low levels of Vitamin A been associated with?
Need it for vision, but also needed for an enzyme that is involved in T cell differentiation.
lower levels put people at Higher risk of infectious diseases.
What has low levels of Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) been associated with?
it is used in electron transport (DH2)
Confers some resistance to infectious diseases in mice
when mice are deprived of it their macrophages die off
