Immune System Flashcards
Role of immune system?
Defense system. Recovers the system.
Learns to get better.
Detecting foreignism.
What does a goblet cell do?
Secrete mucus.
What is a leukocyte?
A white blood cell.
Difference between lymphocytes and leukocytes?
All leukocytes are lymphocytes but not all lymphocytes are leukocytes.
What is a leukocyte?
A specialised cell for the immune system.
Where are stem cells found in the body?
In the bone marrow of long bones.
Role of neutrophil?
Phagocytosis of variety of microorganisms.
Role of eosinophil?
Release enzymes that kill parasites with antibodies on them.
Which immune cell plays a role in the allergic response?
Basophils
What is the precursor to macrophages?
Monocytes
What does macrophage mean?
Big eater
Which cells are a part of the adaptive system?
B cells, T cells, NK cells and Dendritic cells.
Why are NK cells different?
They do not need activation and can detect cells without a marker.
Dendritic cell?
Variety of cell functions
What is the different between innate and adaptive response?
Innate is static, immediate and non-specific to a broad set of pathogens. Adaptive produces certain cells to combat pathogen.
What do macrophages do?
Breakdown pathogens to give antigens to dendritic cells which activate t cells in the lymph node and drain the debris.
Which PAMP causes quick innate response?
TLRs
When does the adaptive response begin to initiate?
96 hours after exposure.
What does inflammation do to the body?
Causes redness, heat and swelling
What is situated in the paracortical area?
Mainly T cells
What is typically found in the primary lymphoid follicle?
Mainly B cells
What does PAMP stand for?
Pathogen associated molecular patterns
How many types of pattern recognition receptors are there?
- Scavenger
- C-type Lectin
- Toll-like
- NOD-like
