Immune System Flashcards
compare and contrast innate immunity and acquired immunity.
natural, developed
What are pathogens?
disease causing agents
List the steps of the inflammatory response
histamine, capillaries expand, WBC & platelets move, WBC destroys pathogens
What do you call proteins found on the surface of viruses and other pathogens?
antigens
What binds to the antigens of viruses and act as biological handcuffs?
antibodies
What are the three types of T cells? What do they do?
Killer , helper, suppressor T cells.
kill, activate, regulate
Which type of B cell produce antibodies?
plasma b cells
What is the function of B memory cells?
“remember” the antigen and produce immediate responses the 2nd time it enters
What is the advantage of receiving vaccinations?
- prevent illness
- allows immune system to respond quickly to infection
- stimulates a specific immune response
