Evolution Flashcards
What is Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?
descent with modification
What is natural selection?
explains how evolution can occur
What are the four evidences of evolution?
overproduction, variation, adaptation, descent with modification
What are the directional, stabilizing, and disruptive selection? Draw a graph for each
favors at one extreme phenotype, both extreme, favors intermediate
What is speciation?
the rise of two or more from one existing species
What are the causes of speciation?
Geographical barrier.
Natural selection.
Genetic drift.
Large mutation.
What are the four evidences of evolution?
fossil records, biochemical evidence, comparative anatomy [homologous, analogous, vestigial structures], comparative embryology
What is geographic isolation?
isolated by physical barriers (ex: volcano, earthquake)
What is adaptation?
a feature that allows an organism to better survive
What is coevolution?
two or more species can evolve over time (bees& flowers)
What is gene flow?
- movement of alleles from one population to another
What are analogous structures?
different structures but used for same functions through evolution (bird wings, bat wings, insect wings)
What are homologous structures?
same structures but used for different functions through evolution (human, whale, bat forelimbs)
