Immune Cells Flashcards
Complement Proteins
Reside in bloodstream.
Cause opsonisation: the marking of pathogens for phagocytosis
Membrane attack complexes: cause lysis in infected cells
Interferons
Released from virally infected cells.
Roles:
- make nearby unaffected cells resistant.
- make nearby affected cells undergo apoptosis.
- activate macrophages.
- interfere with viral replication.
Neutrophils
Perform phagocytosis, resulting in the death of the neutrophil itself.
- short lived
Macrophages
Perform phagocytosis and antigen presentation.
Dendritic Cells
Reside in tissue.
Performs phagocytosis and antigen presentation.
travel to lymph nodes
Mast Cells
Release cytokines and histamines.
Causing:
- vasodilation
- increased blood vessel permeability
- attract phagocytes
Natural Killer Cells
Attack virally infected cells by inducing apoptosis.
Eosinophil
