Religion -in past- british and germans were prot -now are catholic orthodox and jewish Make money Pushed out of home country -may be reluctant immigrants -famine in russia -warfare in russia -looking for a refuge -conditions bad in their country- unstable government, farm life was bad, religious persecution
many immigrants go back home
1/2 of italians will not stay in US- make money and go back home
1/3 return home
jews mostly stay
men will go and make money for their families and then go back home

immigrants go to major cities in US many go to NY 87% of chicago is either an immigrant or a first generation american 1/2 of NY 2/3 of boston
living conditions
crowding, filth, noise, odors, crime
slum lords own terrible apartments and charge too much for them
-4 rroms- 18.5 people, every room is a bedroom

political machine get rich off of political connections they exchange favors for votes corrupt but provides people with services they need not democratic reformers hate it
