What motive did Irish people have to migrate to Whitechapel?
Ireland suffered a devastating famine in the 1840s and starvation and disease were widespread. England offered better opportunities for them to live in.
Irish communities already existed in Whitechapel and were well-established Irish lodging houses.
What motive did Jews have to migrate to Whitechapel?
Jews were officially blamed for the assassination of Emperor Alexander II in 1881. Persecution in Eastern Europe increased thereafter. England offered safer conditions to live in and were not persecuted here.
Irish were subject to prejudice because of their Roman Catholic religion. But also because of the rise in Fenian Irish nationalism. What was this?
At that time the whole of Ireland was rules by Britain but many at the time wanted at least Home Rule and preferably independence.
How did the Fenians act upon their beliefs?
On the 24th January 1885 or known as Dynamite Sunday/ Fenian Dynamite campaign, the Fenians tried to blow up several London landmarks.
What was anarchism and who brought it into Whitechapel?
A revolutionary political idea which said people would be better without government and without laws, and that left to their own devices people would act honourably and kindly to one another. This idea was developed by Russian revolutionaries and some politicians emphasised the threat of Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe
