5) Famine- Ireland in the 1840’s
Pull factors:
1) Promise of freedom and a better life
2) Some had family in America
3) Job availability in factories
Old immigrants
Came to America before 1880
-From Northern/ Western Europe
-Many already spoke English
-German, British, Irish
-Easier time assimilating
-Irish didn’t get along well because they were Catholic
New immigrants
Came to American after 1880
-Southern/ Eastern Europe
-No english
-Poland, Italy, Greece, Russia
-Most had issues assimilating into America
-Different languages, religions, and cultures

-The transformation of the U.S.
-Mexico, India, China
Ellis Island

-Purpose: Medical inspection and registration

-Bad because this lets to people getting diseases

Nativism
Group of people that wanted to preserve the U.S. for white, Protestant, native-born Americans
-feared immigrants taking jobs
Chinese Exclusion Act
(1882)
Chinese workers not allowed into the U.S.
-Chinese living in the U.S. aren’t allowed out
Literacy Test
Immigrants must pass a reading test in their own language
-prevent poor immigrants from South/ Eastern Europe
