What is a settlement house?
Establishments that offered many types of assistance to urban poor people
How did immigration affect cities in the late 1800s?
it made population grow, became the industrial workforce in cities, created ethnic neighborhoods in cities, populated the slums in cities, etc.
How did the rapid growth of cities lead to problems in the cities?
population growth in human waste diseases like whooping cough killing infants, and tuberculosis spreading quickly through the population.
What were some of the efforts made to improve city life in the late 1800s and early 1900s?
Some efforts to improve cities came from religious groups who ran orphanages, recreation centers, prisons, and hospitals. Settlement houses were an example of the type to help in cities.
