What is the difference between the spiritual and natural world ?
Summarize the supernatural dimension?
Aspects of the human experience beyond its comprehension or ability to explain
◦ attributed to the creation or formation of the current realm of experience
◦ belief in the existence of beings beyond the realm of the natural world.
- Different religions have their own unique responses:
The Semitic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam believe that the supernatural dimension is a single divine being (monotheism).
The two Eastern religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, derive from an understanding of a number of
divine beings (polytheism).
Define transcedent ?
- extending or lying beyond the limits of
ordinary experience and knowledge - being beyond comprehension
- transcending the universe or material
existence - universally applicable or significant
EG:
“the antislavery movement … recognized
the transcendent importance of liberty
Define Immnanet?
- existing or operating within comprehension
- being within the limits of possible experience or knowledge
- indwelling, inherent beauty is not
something imposed but
something immanent
Define Transcendent vs Immanent Worldview?
Transcendent Worldview: A belief in a
divine power beyond the
human /physical, that ‘goes beyond’
human limitations
◦ Immanent Worldview: Belief in a divine
power dwelling within the
individual, as a constant reality
What is a deity?
god or godess
Define Pantheism?
god is in everything
Animism?
primitive or tribal religions,spirits inhabit all objects and influence people
Example of Transcendent worldview?
Muslim people believe that God is high
above them; he is not present with them on
earth.
Example of Immanent worldview?
Theravada Buddhism.
believe that they must follow Buddha’s teachings in order to achieve a personal enlightenment that will
remove them from this world of pain and
suffering. The divine power is within them.
