Q

Why is the recurrent laryngeal nerve a problem in vocal cord paralysis?

A

Because the laryngeal nerve dives into the chest and then back up to the neck. The length of t makes it more likely it could be damaged

JUST FYI - I think I made this part up…. so don’t trust it!

Q

Graves’ Opthalmopathy?

A

an autoimmune inflammatory disorder affecting the orbit around the eye, characterized by upper eyelid retraction, swelling (edema), redness (erythema), conjunctivitis, and bulging eyes (proptosis)

The autoantibodies target the fibroblasts in the eye muscles, those fibroblasts can differentiate into fat cells. Fat cells and muscles expand and become inflamed. Veins become compressed, and are unable to drain fluid, causing edema
