Imaging Flashcards
What lies anterior to the right kidney?
Hepatic flexure of the colon
and
the duodenum
What lies anterior to the left kidney?
Splenic artery
part of the spleen
transverse colon
pancreas
At what level is the renal hilum (both sides)
Left - L1
right- L1/L2
How are the renal artery and vein arranged?
Vein anterior
artery posterior
What are the weaknesses of ultrasound scans of the kidneys?
Limited characterisation of focal lesions
No licensed constrast medium
dependant on the skill of the examiner
What are the weaknesses of CT scans of the kidneys?
High does of radiation
risk of contrast induced nephropathy
What are the phases of CT contrast imaging ?
Pre contrast
Corticomedullary
Nephrographic
Excretory
What is pre-contrast CT best for?
No contrast is best to depict calculi
When is the corticomedullary phase?
25 - 70 seconds after IV injection of iodinated contrast
When is the nephrographic phase in a CT scan?
80-180 seconds after IV
When is the exretory CT phase?
5 - 15 minutes after IV injected
What is the closest fat layer to the kidneys and which is a wee bit further out?
Perirenal - around the kidney
Pararenal- around the perirenal fat
What is inbetween the pararenal and perirenal fat layers?
renal fascia
What is contrast induced nephropathy?
impairment in renal function which occours within 3 days of IV contrast administration
What are some of the risk factors for contrast induced nephropathy?
Dehydration
congestive heart failure
Acute MI
Nephrotoxic drugs
