Imaging Flashcards
Provide information about a tumor’s shape, size, and location, along with the source of its blood supply.
Computer Tomography (CT) Scans
Areas of the body that are often difficult to image. Useful in detecting cancer in the CNS and the MS system.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Useful in locating and staging cancer of the thyroid and the bone.
Nuclear Scans
Provides information about the metabolism of an internal structure, along with its size and shape.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan
Uses a rotating camera to create 3D images with the use of radioactive substances. Useful in identifying metastases to the bone.
Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)
If a contrast medium is used as in an upper or lower GI series or intravenous urogram tumors of the esophagus, rectum, colon, or kidneys may be detected.
