IHD AND CHF Drugs: Beta blockers Flashcards
1
Q
Beta blockers drugs?
A
- Non-selective: Propranolol
- β1 (cardiac) selective: Atenolol
- β2 (respiratory) selective: Butaxamine
- α + β Blockers: Labetolol
2
Q
Beta blockers mechanism of action?
A
- Bind to β receptors causing lowered sympathetic output
- ↓ cAMP formed
- ↓ Sinuatrial node activity, ↓ AV conduction= ↓ HR
- ↓ Ca2+ influx= ↓ contractility
- ↓ Myosin Light Chain Kinase activity
= ↓ Myosin Light chain phosphorylated
= ↓ vascularsmooth muscle contraction
= vasodilation - Maintains systolic pressure but lower diastolic pressure
3
Q
Beta blockers side effects?
A
- Hypotension when overdosed
- Bradycardia and possible heart block
- Erectile dysfunction
- CNS disturbances – mild sedation
4
Q
Beta blockers Contraindicated in?
A
- Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus px (hypoglycaemia)
2. Asthma patients (bronchoconstriction)
