Ignore, Count, Emotion Coach? Flashcards
I am giving instruction to the whole class when one of my students begins to talk with a student across the room.
Count it
A student who already has been counted, leaves her seat to go talk with a student who is outside the classroom
Count it
On being counted for a second time, the student backchats in an aggressive tone saying “Can’t we do anything, leave me along”
Count it & Take 5
After the take 5, look for positives and acknowledge these in some way (indicate a fresh start to move on without grudges)
A student is struggling to finish his writing task, he looks around a number of times to see his peers enjoying some time playing an educational app on their tablets. He huffs and puffs while wriggling in his seat.
Ignore it
Three minutes has gone by and the same student asks to join his friends on the tablet, but he is reminded that he needs to finish his writing first. He responds by swiping his arm across the desk knocking his drink bottle onto the floor.
Ignore it
I have my back to the class whilst setting up the smart board, Sally gets out of her seat and moves to the window and starts waving to a group of students playing outside. Another student, Lisa, brings this to the teacher’s attention by saying “Sally is out of her seat, Mr Brooks”
Count it
Give time for Sally to get back to her seat… turn around a few moments later to see if Sally has returned without giving Lisa the attention, if not count it
Ten minutes have passed and I notice Sally and Lisa poking faces at each other
Count both of them
Fifteen minutes later, Lisa informs me that her neighbour, Sam, hasn’t completed the necessary work before moving to the floor to play with the blocks. Sam swivels in his seat, takes a deep breath, scrunches up his face and glares over at Lisa.
Count Lisa (Take five)
Ignore (Sam)
As Lisa heads to time out, Sally pipes up with “Ha ha, suffer you dibber dobber”
Automatic three
While lining up outside the classroom, I notice Isaac push a peer to the ground in an aggressive manner
Automatic three
Isaac protests, “Jack should go too. He gave me a twister.”
Ignore it.
Follow up with Isaac after.
Bill is working well and I notic his neighbour Isaac flicking and pushing Bill’s workbook, and making it very difficult for Bill to write.
Count it
Bill smiles pleasingly, feeling protected and happy that justice is done. Once my attention is elsewhere, Isaac again flicks Bill’s work book. Bill puts up his hand and addresses me. “Mr Brooks, Isaac is annoying me.”
Count it. Emotion coach it.
I have prompted my students to settle down whilst walking in class. This is after a return bus trip from the swimming pool. The students who have ignored me are being loud and are in general disarray.
Count the whole class
Shortly after, 2 boys push past another boy as they come in the doorway, preventing him from entering. He now must wait for the entire class to enter before he can.
Count the two boys and emotion coach the other boy.
One of the boys who was counted turns to the teacher and says “What did I do?”
Ignore it
Two minutes later, the same boy is slouching in his seat, arms folded and pouting.
Emotion coach it.
Student out of chair and chatting to friends during Maths.
Count it
Student fiddling with another child’s hair at mat time (other child is not bothered)
Ignore it
