Igneous Rocks Lab Flashcards
Igneous rock textures
Phaneritic, aphanitic, glassy, porphyritic, vesicular, pyroclastic
Difference between intrusive and extrusive
Intrusive means that the rock cooled under the surface. Intrusive rocks have larger crystals. Extrusive means that the rock cooled outside the surface. Extrusive rocks have small crystals or no crystals at all.
What minerals can be found in a mafic rock?(4)
Olivine, pyroxene, plagioclase, and sometimes amphibole
What minerals can be found in an intermediate rock?(6)
Plagioclase, hornblende, quartz, biotite, k-feldspar, and sometimes pyroxene
What minerals can be found in a felsic rock?(5)
plagioclase, k-feldspar, quartz, amphibole, and biotite
Two types of felsic (silicic) rock
Rhyolite (extrusive) and Granite (intrusive)
Two types of intermediate rock
Andesite (extrusive) and Diorite (intrusive)
Two types of mafic rock
Basalt (extrusive) and Gabbro (intrusive)
