What is IgA nephropathy?

A
  1. Also called Bergers disease or mesangioproliferative glomerulonephrits
  2. Commonest cause worldwide
  3. Caused by mesangial deposition of IgA complexes
  4. Overlap with Henoch-Schonlein purpura
  5. Mesangial hypercellularity

How does IgA present?

A
  1. Young male
  2. Associated with mucosal infections
  3. Renal failure

Differential diagnosis between IgA nephropathy and post strep glomulonephritis?

A
  1. PSG assoc with low complement levels: main symptom is proteinuria
  2. PSG develops 2 weeks or so after URTI rather than 1/2 days
