What is IgA nephropathy?
A
- Also called Bergers disease or mesangioproliferative glomerulonephrits
- Commonest cause worldwide
- Caused by mesangial deposition of IgA complexes
- Overlap with Henoch-Schonlein purpura
- Mesangial hypercellularity

How does IgA present?
A
- Young male
- Associated with mucosal infections
- Renal failure

Differential diagnosis between IgA nephropathy and post strep glomulonephritis?
A
- PSG assoc with low complement levels: main symptom is proteinuria
- PSG develops 2 weeks or so after URTI rather than 1/2 days

What gives red blood cell casts?
A
Glomerulonephritis, Renal ischemia and infarction

What gives white blood cell casts?
A
Acute pyelonephritis, interstitial nephritis

What gives granular (muddy brown) casts
A
Acute tubular necrosis

What gives hyaline casts?
A
Common and non specific, maybe seen on exercise/dehydration
