IFR TERMS Flashcards
Approach Corridor
Entire designated area for approach maneuvers
Area Navigation (RNAV) “T” Route
Direct GPS routes
Circle-to-Land
Maneuver to land on a different runway when straight-in isn’t possible.
Decision Altitude (DA)
Altitude at which the pilot must decide to land or go missed during an approach.
Decision Height (DH)
Height above runway where a landing decision is made on precision approaches.
Feeder Routes
Transition routes from routes to an approach fix.
Full Approach
Entire procedure needed to establish on final approach.
Initial Approach Fix (IAF)
Start of the initial segment of an instrument approach.
Intermediate Fix (IF)
Fix marking the start of the intermediate approach segment.
Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA)
Lowest altitude for non-precision approach without visual contact.
Missed Approach Point (MAP)
Point where a missed approach must begin if no runway in sight.
Nonprecision Approach Procedure
Approach without vertical guidance (e.g., VOR, GPS).
Precision Approach Procedure
Approach with both lateral and vertical guidance (e.g., ILS).
Standard Instrument Approach Procedure (SIAP)
Predefined maneuvers for an instrument approach.
Stepdown Fix
Fix allowing further descent while clearing obstacles.
Minimum Reception Altitude (MRA)
Lowest altitude to receive a navigation signal at a fix.
Maximum Authorized Altitude (MAA)
Maximum altitude for a specific route/ airway
Minimum Obstruction Clearance Altitude (MOCA)
Lowest altitude ensuring obstacle clearance and signal reception.
Off Route Obstruction Clearance Altitude (OROCA)
Altitude providing obstruction clearance on off-route areas.
Minimum Turning Altitude (MTA)
Altitude ensuring obstacle clearance during turns.
Minimum Crossing Altitude (MCA)
Lowest altitude to cross a fix while meeting clearance requirements.
