Q

Instrument PIC Recency of Experience

A

In the past 6 calendar months, under actual/simulated instrument conditions or FTD/simulator, in the same aircraft category, log 6 HITS:
6 instrument approaches
Holding Procedures and Tasks
Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of electronic navigation systems

OR, using an ATD (approved PC, flight sim, hardware) in the past 2 calendar months:
3 hours of instrument experience
Holding procedures and tasks
6 instrument approaches
2 of EACH type of unusual attitude recoveries - Ascending, stall condition, and a descending VNE condition

If you’re not current going past SIX MONTHS, you can still log the requirements (6 HITS) and get current with a safety pilot under simulated/actual conditions (instructor, pilot, or examiner)

Looking back TWELVE MONTHS, now you need an IPC with a CFII, an examiner, or an approved person

Q

If you are not current going past SIX months, what do you have to do to stay current?

8
Q

What are the requirements for a safety pilot?

A

The safety pilot must be a private pilot in the same category/class, have adequate forward and side vision to each side of the aircraft, and the aircraft must have dual control systems.

10
Q

Can an IPC be completed in an approved simulator?

A

Certain IPC tasks (found at a table at the end of the instrument OPTS) can be completed in an approved FTD/flight simulator, HOWEVER, a FULL IPC can only be conducted in certain full-motion simulators or the real aircraft. Certain procudures, like circling maneuvers, can’t be completed on low-end FTDs/flight sims.

Q

What is the 1 in 60 rule?

A

The rule states that 1 degree of climb/descent closely equals 100’/NM

If you multiply your descent angle (1 degree) by your miles-per-minute, then add two zeros to the end (x 100), you’ll have your FPM descent rate. So in this example, if you’re flying at 120 knots, you’re traveling 2 miles-per-minute (MPM) (120/60=2).
