IFR Quick Review Sheet (PilotsCafe) Flashcards
What pre-flight info is required for IFR?
WDRAFT - Weather Forecast Known delays as advised by ATC Runway lengths of intended use Alternatives if flight cannot be completed as planned Fuel requirements Takeoff and landing performance data
What are the aircraft documents required for flight?
ARROW - Airworthiness Certificate Registration Certificate Radio Station License (for international) Operating Limitations / AFM Weight and Balance Data
What are the aircraft maintenance inspections required for IFR?
AVIATE - Annual Inspection VOR Check (every 30 days) 100-hour Inspection Altimeter, Altitude-Reporting, and Static Source System (every 24 months) Transponder (every 24 months) ELT (every 12 months)
Pre-flight self assessment
IMSAFE - Illness Medication Stress Alcohol (8 hours bottle to throttle, .04 BAL) Fatigue Eating / Emotion
What are risk management and personal minimums?
PAVE -
Pilot (general health, physical/mental/emotional state, proficiency, currency)
Aircraft (airworthiness, equipment, performance)
Environment (weather hazards, terrain, airports/runways to be used, and other conditions)
External Pressure (meetings, “get-there-itis,” people waiting at destination)
Instrument PIC Recency of Experience
In the past 6 calendar months, under actual/simulated instrument conditions or FTD/simulator, in the same aircraft category, log 6 HITS:
6 instrument approaches
Holding Procedures and Tasks
Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of electronic navigation systems
OR, using an ATD (approved PC, flight sim, hardware) in the past 2 calendar months:
3 hours of instrument experience
Holding procedures and tasks
6 instrument approaches
2 of EACH type of unusual attitude recoveries - Ascending, stall condition, and a descending VNE condition
If you’re not current going past SIX MONTHS, you can still log the requirements (6 HITS) and get current with a safety pilot under simulated/actual conditions (instructor, pilot, or examiner)
Looking back TWELVE MONTHS, now you need an IPC with a CFII, an examiner, or an approved person
If you are not current going past SIX months, what do you have to do to stay current?
You can still log the requirements (6 HITS) and get current with a safety pilot (instructor, pilot, or examiner) under simulated/actual conditions
What are the requirements for a safety pilot?
The safety pilot must be a private pilot in the same category/class, have adequate forward and side vision to each side of the aircraft, and the aircraft must have dual control systems.
If you are not current going past TWELVE months, what do you have to do to stay current?
Looking back TWELVE MONTHS, now you need an IPC with a CFII, an examiner, or an approved person
Can an IPC be completed in an approved simulator?
Certain IPC tasks (found at a table at the end of the instrument OPTS) can be completed in an approved FTD/flight simulator, HOWEVER, a FULL IPC can only be conducted in certain full-motion simulators or the real aircraft. Certain procudures, like circling maneuvers, can’t be completed on low-end FTDs/flight sims.
To carry passengers as PIC, you need:
3 takeoffs and landings in the last 90 days in the same category/class/type (if type rating required)
To carry passengers as PIC at night, you need:
One hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise - 3 takeoffs and landings in the past 90 days to a full stop in the same category/class/type (if type rating required)
What is the 1 in 60 rule?
The rule states that 1 degree of climb/descent closely equals 100’/NM
If you multiply your descent angle (1 degree) by your miles-per-minute, then add two zeros to the end (x 100), you’ll have your FPM descent rate. So in this example, if you’re flying at 120 knots, you’re traveling 2 miles-per-minute (MPM) (120/60=2).
What is the required equipment for IFR flight?
GRAB CARD – Generator/Alternator Radios Altimeter (sensitive altimeter) Ball
Clock (digital or second-hand sweep)
Attitude Indicator
Rate of Turn
DG – Directional Gyro
