IFR Ops Flashcards
Can a pilot fly IFR to an airport outside of controlled airspace or
- at an airport that does not have an approved instrument approach?
No!
Explain the IFR Alternate Minimums?
Check destination forecasted weather for time of arrival 1 hr before / 1 hr after…
No alternate required if:
1) ceiling 1500’ above lowest circling min
2) if circling is NA, add 1500’ to the lowest published or 2000’ height above airport…Whichever is greater
3) Visibility 3sm or 2sm more than the lowest applicable vis mins, whichever is greater
Second in Command Limitations
1) SIC w/ less than 50hrs - pilot monitoring
2) SIC w/ 50hrs and less than 75hrs
T/O and Climbs, enroute legs, descent to 12,000
3) w/ 75 hrs or more
Any operations approved by PIC
Explain Take Off Minimums and what is required?
C057
standard T/O Minimums 1 sm and 5000 RVR
1) Std. Vs published …
Always used published if available otherwise standard
2) when takeoff min is less than or equal to standard
We are allowed to use a minimum equal to lowest straight-in Cat 1 minimum
- Take off alternate is necessary within 1 hr flight time of conditions don’t allow landing
Cargo -
Whatever straight-in approach minimum that gets you back in to the airport however fly no lower than
200’ 1/2 sm (Cat 1)
Precision and Non-prec. Approach
Wxw more than mins and then changes… what are you allowed to do
Precision approach
- On ILS and passed FAF you can
continue approach
- or on ASR & PAR final w/ controller
Non- Precision
- passed FAF or facility
At MDA or DA/DH - we must be at or above minimums
What is considered safe runway environment length?
Metro - 4000’
Do jet - 5000’
Who can declare an emergency in flight?
Dispatch and PIC
Can you fly broken aircraft?
Never…
Must have:
- Mel
- deferral
- or be ferry permitted
Emergency acronym.

Steps
-react immediately to gpws
-Aggressively pwr up
-smooth but aggressively pull up
15-20 degrees initially
- wings level
- raise flaps 1/4
- retract gear
Respect stick shaker but skirt it
- climb
-act
FAF and approach rules of thumb on altitude
Outside of FAF never be below 1500 AGL
Inside, never below 500
How to determine VDP visual decision point?
MDA, da / 300
