How to do organization?
- Opposite sides: Support then oppose
- 2 same side: Stronger then weaker / Easiest then hardest to explain
What to do in introduction?
Introduce topic
-Paraphrase the statement
Thesis: what the essay is about / main message / answer to the question (NO supporting ideas)
How to do thesis for what extent you agree or disagree?
I fully agree/partly agree/totally disagree with this standpoint for the following reasons.
How to develop/extension/explain/support?
- Why?
- So (what)?
- Like (what)? = examples = more specific (including common/shared human experience)
- How? = more specific
- Or (else what)? = like a paraphrase in reverse / alternative explanation
- Comment/Observation
How come up with supporting ideas?
turning the question/prompt into a full sentence answer to focus your ideas (complete the sentence in as few words as possible):
What’s an alternative approach to opinion essay?
Think of examples of the topic and whether you think they are good/bad.
-Your topic sentences should again summarize the topic and also introduce your example (instead of your supporting idea).
- Develop using the same questions:
ex: the cause of the example
What are some higher level vocabulary for introduction?
“think/believe” → affirm/assert/argue
“Statement” → argument
How to improve marks in terms of vocabulary?
Think of any terminology/vocabulary or facts you know about the topic and include it (in a way that’s relevant to the question).
What to make sure when doing examples?
Make sure your examples remain specific.
What to remember when paraphrasing?
No more than 3 words the same in a row
What are some useful connecting words when answering “Or” question?
- Prepositions: as opposed to / rather than / instead of
- Adverbs: Alternatively, / Otherwise,
- Prepositional phrases: On the other hand,
How are some ways we can do rebuttals? (9 points)
- Impossible/Unrealistic
- Inaccurate/Untrue (in part)
- Irrelevant/Unrelated
- Insignificant/Unimportant
- Why not as good/bad as the other
- Why more/less important than the other
- Solution
- Compensation
- Alternatives (explanations/approaches/outcomes)
What to do if you can’t think of any development (why, how, so, like, or)?
then go back to the previous sentence, and try to answer these question for that sentence instead.

What to look out when doing advantages and disadvantages question?
Make sure that you don’t change the question to two sides like “Discuss both views”, instead, talk about the adv and disadv of the statement they gave you.
what to write in conclusion?
same ideas (but paraphrased & summarized) as in your body paragraphs. Don’t add new ones or make them more general.
more than 1 supporting idea in your body paragraphs, you need to mention both of them in your conclusion
or add ultimate result from body paragraph
