IE Imp Def Flashcards
Inheritance
Transmission of genitic characteristics from generation to generation
Chromosome
Thread like structure of DNA carrying genetic information in the form of genes
(drawn as “X”)
Gene:
a length of DNA that is the unit of heredity and
codes for a specific protein. A gene may be copied and passed on to the next generation
Allele:
any of two or more alternative forms of a gene
Haploid nucleus:
a nucleus containing a single set of
unpaired chromosomes (e.g. sperm and egg)
Diploid nucleus
a nucleus containing two sets of
chromosomes (e.g. in body cells)
Womans and mans chromososme
Woman:XX
Male:XY
Chance of male and female
There is always a 50% chance of
getting a boy and 50% change of getting a girl
What chromosomes can a male and female gamete carry
woman’s gamete can only carry an “X” chromosome, and a male gamete can carry either an “X” or “Y” chromosome;
DNA:
control cell functions by controlling production of
proteins, antibodies and receptors for neurotransmitters
What does DNA contain
2 long strands and 4 nucleotides, AT and CG
