Oldest and innermost region of the brain
Medulla
Swelling on brain stem, controls heartbeat and breathing
Reticular formation
Network of neurons inside the brain stem that connects to the spinal cord
Thalamus
Brains switchboard, takes information from the senses (not smell) and sends it to appropriate region
Cerebellum
Two wrinkled halves, enables voluntary & involuntary movement
Limbic system
The limbic system is the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses, especially when it comes to behaviours we need for survival: feeding, reproduction and caring for our young, and fight or flight responses.
Contains thalamus, hypothalamus, frontal lobe, olfactory bulb, amygdala, hippocampus
Hypothalamus
Homeostasis , governs maintenance, deals with four f’s fight flight food fornication, rewards for doing necessary bodily functions
Lateral Hypothalamus
Stimulates hunger
Ventromedial hypothalamus
Decreases hunger “full feeling”
Amygdala
Modulates fear and aggressive
Hippocampus
Modulates memory function
Dopamine
Excitatory, influenced movement, learning, attention, and emotion. Reward
Acetylcholine
Enables muscle, action, learning, and memory, excitatory
