What is an ideology?
World view or set of ideas or beliefs. In this context it usually means they regard it as factually or morally wrong misleading people.
Marxism and ideology
R/C ideology prevents change and class consciousness
Hegemony and revolution
Developed marxs idea. Challenge ruling class hegemony. Organic intellectuals- group led by one leader but put ideas together.
Marxist criticism
Could be economic factors that prevent a revolution not the dominant ideology? - fear of unemployment
Ideology of Nationalism
Belief part of a shared community and there is a belief of belonging. Such as through football. Can bind millions together and create sense of common purpose.
Marxism: Nationalism a false class consciousness
Encourages workers to believe they have more in common with capitalists than workers= prevents revolution and persuades them to fight their wars
Functionalism: nationalism as a Civil Religion
See it as a secular civil religion that integrates everyone.

- Ideological thought- reflects interests of people in power
- Utopian thought- Justifies change e.g marxism

Nationalism uses education to create single standard
