Learned Helplessness
Perceived lack of control and often arises when one continuously faces a perceived uncontrollable situation and thus gives up on trying to change it. This trait is strongly linked to clinical depression
Self-Discrepancy Theory
Maintains that each of us have three selves and that perceived differences between them lead to negative feelings. The three selves are the actual self, the way we see ourselves as we currently are; the ideal self, the person we would like to be; and the ought self, the way others think we should be.
Self-schemas
Labels that we give ourselves that have a set qualities. These can include characteristics such as driven, motivated and smart. Self-schemas are part of our self-concept, which is our overall sense of who we are. These labels also relate to self-esteem, which is how we feel about ourselves
Internal Locus of Control
- Perceives ability to control our lives and the situations we face.
- Includes attributing your circumstances (including successes and failures) to your own characteristics actions
Reference Group
Is a group that someone compares themselves or their in-group to, but does not belong to.
In-group
Is a group that someone belongs to
Minority Group
Group in society that has less people than the majority group, and does not describe the members of the online blog in this scenario
Majority Group
group in society that often has more people, power or control than other smaller or minority groups
Theory of Mind
Refers to the ability to understand how the minds of others work. Once we develop a theory of mind, we begin to be able to recognize how others think of us, and to react to these perceptions
Hierarchy of Salience
Theory of identity organization that posits that we let situations dictate which identity holds the most importance at any given moment
External Locus of Control
Is the perceives influence of fate and external factors influencing our lives. A student attributing her lack of success to a teacher’s poor explanations is an example of someone with an external locus of control.
Political Borders
- Is an identify based on political borders, and needs not be tied to ethnicity or even legal citizenship.
- Ethnic identity refers to the part of ones identity associated with membership in a given racial or ethnic group, and is not based on political borders.
- Gender identity refers to the behaviours that one adopts to project the gender that they wish to portray, and is also unrelated to political borders
Undifferentiated Gender Identity
Means having both low femininity and low masculinity
