Identifying Requirements Flashcards
Define
context.
the situation a design solution is intended for
What is a useful starting point when
considering the context for which a design solution is intended?
create a mind-map considering the general influences such as:
* who?
* why?
* what?
* when?
* where?
* how?
Define
stakeholder.
a person, group or organisation with an interest in a product/system
Define
primary user.
the person or group of people who will use a product or system
Define
human factors.
the scientific discipline concerned with the interaction between humans and elements of a product and/or system
this is also known as ergonomics
Define
culture.
(3 factors)
- the ideas and activities of groups of people
- the way that people behave and relate to one another
- the beliefs and aspirations of a group of people
Define
globalisation.
businesses and organisations operating globally and developing international influence
Define
sustainable economic growth.
development that aims to satisfy the economic needs of humans while sustaining natural resources and the environment for future generations
Define
usability.
(2 factors)
- how easy a product is to use
- how clear and obvious the functions are
Define
ergonomics.
the study of how we use and interact with a product or system
Define
inclusive design.
designing for the widest possible audience
Define
anthropometrics.
the study of the sizes of the human body
Define
psychological factors.
such things as mental reaction time, various acquired meanings associated with certain colours, the capabilities and limitations of short-term memory
Define
aesthetically pleasing.
beautiful to the senses
Define
aesthetics.
factors concerned with the appreciation of beauty
this can include how something looks, sound, feels, tastes and smells
KEY POINT
Why is colour so important in product design?
(not to memorise just to be aware of)
Research suggests that 70% of consumer purchasing decisions are made in-store. Catching the consumer’s attention and conveying information effectively are critical to successful sales. Careful use of colour can catch a consumer’s eye.
Define
proportion.
the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design
Define
symmetry.
when elements are arranged in the same way on both sides of an axis or when rotated around a point
Define
asymmetry.
the absence of symmetry of any kind
What is the
golden ratio?
a common mathematical ratio found in nature that can be used to create pleasing, natural-looking compositions in your design work
also knows as the Golden Mean and the Golden Section
