Hannah’s acknowledgement of thanks to God, when she brings Shmuel to the Temple. “For this child did I pray, and the Lord granted me my request, which I asked of Him.”

Part of Hannah’s prayer of thanks for Shmuel. “While the barren woman has born seven, She that had many children, has been bereaved.”
הֲקִימֹתִי לִי כֹּהֵן נֶאֱמָן כַּאֲשֶׁר בִּלְבָבִי וּבְנַפְשִׁי יַעֲשֶֹה וּבָנִיתִי לוֹ בַּיִת נֶאֱמָן וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ לִפְנֵי מְשִׁיחִי כָּל הַיָּמִים
God to Eli- Describing how He will raise Shmuel up to take the place of Eli’s sons. “I shall raise up for Myself a faithful priest, who will do as is in My heart and in My mind, and I shall build for him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed all of the days.”
דַּבֵּר כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ עַבְדֶּךָ
Shmuel to God, when God speaks to him after Eli instructs him to lie down and wait. “Speak, for Your bondsman is listening.”
יְהֹוָה הוּא הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינָו יַעֲשֶֹה
Shumel respond to Eli’s request that he share what God has told him. “He is the Lord. May He do what is good in His eyes.”
רַק דָּגוֹן נִשְׁאַר עָלָיו
The captured Ark destroys the idols that are kept with it. “only Dagon(‘s trunk) alone remained upon him”
שִֹימָה לָּנוּ מֶלֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵנוּ כְּכָל הַגּוֹיִם
the Israelite call for a king- “set up for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
וְהָיִינוּ גַם אֲנַחְנוּ כְּכָל הַגּוֹיִם
The Israelite affirmation of their desire for a king after Shmuel warns them of the consequences. “And also we shall be like all the nations”
בָּחוּר וָטוֹב וְאֵין אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל טוֹב מִמֶּנּוּ מִשִּׁכְמוֹ וָמַעְלָה גָּבֹהַּ מִכָּל הָעָם
Saul’s physical description- “He was young and handsome, there being no one of the children of Israel handsomer than he; from his shoulders and upwards he was taller than any of the people.”
הֲגַם שָׁאוּל בַּנְּבִיאִים
As part of the process of becoming king, Saul encounters a group of prophets and begins to prophecy with them. “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
נֶחְבָּא אֶל הַכֵּלִים
A sign of Saul’s shyness, he hides when he is being selected as king. “He is hidden among the baggage”
לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה הַגִּלְגָּל וּנְחַדֵּשׁ שָׁם הַמְּלוּכָה
Shmuel to the people, inviting them to establish Saul as king- “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew there the kingdom.”
אֶת שׁוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וַחֲמוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וְאֶת מִי עָשַׁקְתִּי אֶת מִי רַצּוֹתִי וּמִיַּד מִי לָקַחְתִּי כֹפֶר וְאַעְלִים עֵינַי בּוֹ וְאָשִׁיב לָכֶם
Shmuel to Israel, establishing that he has committed no wrong against anyone up to this point- “…whose ox did I take, or whose ass did I take, or whom did I rob; or whom did I oppress, or from whose hand did I take a ransom, that I hide my eyes therewith, and I shall restore to you.”
הֲלוֹא קְצִיר חִטִּים הַיּוֹם אֶקְרָא אֶל יְהֹוָה וְיִתֵּן קֹלוֹת וּמָטָר וּדְעוּ וּרְאוּ כִּי רָעַתְכֶם רַבָּה אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה לִשְׁאוֹל לָכֶם מֶלֶךְ
Shmuel to the people, calling down the miracle of rain out of season to support his claim- “Is it not wheat harvest today? I shall call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and rain, and you shall know and see, that your evil is great, which you have done in the eyes of the Lord, to ask for yourselves a king.”
וְחָרָשׁ לֹא יִמָּצֵא בְּכֹל אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל
The Philistines restricted access to Iron age tech, and Israel was not able to arm themselves to match their enemy. - “No smith could be found in all of Israel”
הֲיוֹנָתָן יָמוּת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הַיְשׁוּעָה הַגְּדוֹלָה הַזֹּאת בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל חָלִילָה חַי יְהֹוָה אִם יִפֹּל מִשַּׂעֲרַת רֹאשׁוֹ אַרְצָה כִּי עִם אֱלֹהִים עָשָֹה הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה
The people protect Jonathan from being put to death for tasting the honey forbidden by Saul. “Shall Jonathan, who has wrought this great salvation in Israel, die? Far be it. As the Lord lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.”
וּמֶה קוֹל הַצֹּאן הַזֶּה בְּאָזְנָי וְקוֹל הַבָּקָר אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי שֹׁמֵעַ
Samuel to Saul, noticing that Saul has not killed all the Amalakites as he was commanded. “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears? And the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
הֲלוֹא אִם קָטֹן אַתָּה בְּעֵינֶיךָ רֹאשׁ שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָתָּה
Samuel rebuking Saul for failing to follow God’s command regarding the Aamalakites”Even if you are small in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel?”
הַחֵפֶץ לַיהֹוָה בְּעֹלוֹת וּזְבָחִים כִּשְׁמֹעַ בְּקוֹל יְהֹוָה הִנֵּה שְׁמֹעַ מִזֶּבַח טוֹב לְהַקְשִׁיב מֵחֵלֶב אֵילִים
Samuel rebuking Saul, rejecting Saul’s attempt to offer the the remaining booty from Amalek as an apology. – “Has the Lord (as much) desire in burnt offerings and peace-offerings, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than a peace-offering; to hearken (is better) than the fat of rams.”
וַיִּסֹּב שְׁמוּאֵל לָלֶכֶת וַיַּחֲזֵק בִּכְנַף מְעִילוֹ וַיִּקָּרַע וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו שְׁמוּאֵל קָרַע יְהֹוָה אֶת מַמְלְכוּת יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵעָלֶיךָ הַיּוֹם וּנְתָנָהּ לְרֵעֲךָ הַטּוֹב מִמֶּךָּ:
Samuel pronounces God’s decision to turn away from Saul as a consequence of his disobedience regarding the Amalakites “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you, today; and has given it to your fellow who is better than you. And also, the Strength of Israel will neither lie nor repent, for He is not a man to repent.”
כִּי הָאָדָם יִרְאֶה לַעֵינַיִם וַיהֹוָה יִרְאֶה לַלֵּבָב
God to Samuel, regarding David. David may not be impressive in appearance, but God sees his heart and finds him worthy of the crown. – “For man sees what is visible to his eyes, but God sees into the heart.”
יְהֹוָה אֲשֶׁר הִצִּלַנִי מִיַּד הָאֲרִי וּמִיַּד הַדֹּב הוּא יַצִּילֵנִי מִיַּד הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי הַזֶּה
David to Saul, expressing his confidence that God will protect him and let him defeat Goliath because of his past experience. “The Lord Who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.”
הֲכֶלֶב אָנֹכִי כִּי אַתָּה בָא אֵלַי בַּמַּקְלוֹת
Goliath to David, expressing his contempt for David. “Am I a dog for you to come at me with sticks?”
אַתָּה בָּא אֵלַי בְּחֶרֶב וּבַחֲנִית וּבְכִידוֹן וְאָנֹכִי בָא אֵלֶיךָ בְּשֵׁם יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת
David to Goliath– “You come to me with spear and javelin, and I come to you with the Name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies”
וַיִּתְפַּשֵּׁט יְהוֹנָתָן אֶת הַמְּעִיל אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו וַיִּתְּנֵהוּ לְדָוִד
An expression of Jonathan’s love for David– “And Jonathan stripped himself of the cloak which was on him, and gave it to David, and his garments”

What is the Narrator’s point of view about Saul’s character, David’s character, David’s rise to power, and the conflict between Saul and David?
The narrator assumes that Saul is paranoid, David is noble and nigh perfect as a man and future king, David’s rise to power comes justly and without any attempt to grab power on David’s part, and that in all ways David is in the right in his conflict with Saul.
