Disenfranchise
To deny the right to vote
Nonviolent direct action
A nonviolent protest used to promote change in a society without resorting to violence or other “lesser” measures (ex: Montgomery Bus Boycott)
Civil disobedience
the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest
Reverse discrimination
the practice or policy of favoring individuals belonging to groups known to have been discriminated against previously (ex: discriminating against white people)
Afrocentrism
a cultural ideology or worldview mostly limited to the United States that focuses on the history of black Africans.
Desegregation
the ending of a policy of racial segregation
Filibuster
an action that obstructs progress in a legislative assembly while not technically contravening the required procedures (ex: a prolonged speech)
Literacy tests
Tests of writing and reading ability. Used to deny African Americans the right to vote
Poll tax
A tax needed to vote. Used in the US to disenfranchise poor whites as well as African Americans
Sit-ins
a form of direct action that involves one or more people occupying an area for a protest, often to promote political, social, or economic change (ex: Greensboro sit-ins)
Black Nationalism
the advocacy of separate national status for black people, especially in the US
