ICU Equipment Flashcards
Anticoagulation
Using drugs to make blood “thinner” and unable to create a clot to discourage thrombosis.
Arrhythmia
Variation from normal rhythm (especially heartbeat)
Arterial line (A-line)
Catheter inserted into an artery and attached to an electronic monitoring system to directly measure arterial BP.
Catheter
A rubber, plastic, metal, or glass tube used to remove or inject fluids into a pt.
Dialysis
- Used in renal failure to remove waste products in the blood that are normally excreted in urine.
- Blood circulates out through machine with a filter and goes back into body.
- Semi-permeable membrane, high concentration to low concentration.
Endotracheal tube (ETT)
- Hollow, 10in long tube inserted into trachea from outside.
- Pt breathes through tube instead of mouth.
- Cuff at end is inflated to seal airway and keep it in place.
Fistula
- Any abnormal, tube-like passage within body tissue.
- Usually between two internal organs or leading from an organ to the body’s surface.
Hypoxemia
Deficient O2 in blood
International Normalized Ratio (INR)
A system for reporting the results of blood coagulation tests.
Nasogastric (NG) tube
- Plastic tube inserted into a nostril and ending in the stomach.
- Used to remove fluid or gas from stomach, monitor digestive function, administer medications or nutrients, or obtain specimens of stomach contents.
Shunt
A passage or anastomosis between two naturla vessels (especially blood vessels).
Stoma
An artificial permanent opening, especially in the abdominal wall, made by surgical procedures.
Specialized adjustable beds
- Can be put into short sitting or standing from foot of bed
- adjustable head and LEs
- Can be raised and lowered to/from ground
Turning frames
- Skeletal stability/alignment
- Continuous maintenance of cervical traction
- Spinal Fx requiring immobilization
- Pressure ulcers
Air-fluidized support bed
- Infected lesions
- Burns
- SCI
- Extensive pressure sores
- Skin grafts
- Prolonged immobilization
- Difficult to transfer pt
- Expensive
- Can be punctured
