ICP Flashcards
Medications to decrease ICP
Osmotic Diuretics (mannitol) or hypertonic saline (reduce fluid from body tissues)
Dexamethasone (Decadron) decrease inflammatory response and cerebral edema if the ICP is caused by a brain tumor or abscess
Histamine blocker or proton inhibitors to protect gastric mucosa
Elevate HOB 20-30 degrees/ Hip flexión less than 90 degrees
May need Fluid Drainage
Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP) is maintained at 60 to 70 mm Hg or higher to ensure oxygenation of the brain tissue.
Short term hyperventilation
Barbiturates for heavy sedation and slow metabolism
Cooling blanket for fever control or warming methods to prevent shivering
Craniectomy - a portion of the skull is removed and dura is opened to allow expansion of swollen brain without compression.
