ICONS Flashcards
What are the 6 ICONS of evolution?
- Heckel’s drawings
- Finches in the Galapagos
- 4-winged fruit fly
- Antibiotic resistant bacteria
- The tree of life
- Fossil record
What is heckels drawings ICON?
He made up his drawings so that they look more similar, switches around stages and leaves out the early stages of development.
The chart is supposed to show homology
What is the finch ICON?
They finches aren’t actually a new species forming or real evolutionary change, just a species of oscillating back and forth and adapting to temperature change
What is micro evolution vs macro?
Relates to the finch ICON
Micro- small changes IN a species
Macro- changing that make a new species
What is the 4 winged fruit fly ICON?
It can’t even survive, so the evolution is not a step forward- it’s a dead end because the trait doesn’t help the species
The mutations can’t pass on cause the fly can’t even reproduce
What the antibolic resistant bacteria ICON?
The resistant cells (the mutation) don’t last in competition with the parents
The evolutionary change is permemnant
What is the tree of life ICON?
Homology is used to try to prove this, but homology says that these organisms with the similar structures are produced by the same genes (relating them)
However, the organisms came from different genes, disproving this
What is he fossil record ICON?
It shows the “gradual development of life” which ignores the Cambrian explosion which was sudden life
Also, not all of the fossils showed up in the record (such as soft body) not showing evolution but suddenness when they finally appeared
Is artifact hypothesis?
Perhaps we aren’t searching for or collecting fossils effectively
