Ice Protection Flashcards
How do aircraft get ice?
Aircraft surface disturbs super cooled droplets turning into ice
What are the three types of ice?
Rime Ice
Clear/Glaze Ice
Mixed Ice
This type of ice is MILKY white and rough, made of SMALL water droplets?
Rime Ice
This type of ice is CLEAR and made of LARGE droplets?
Clear Ice
What are the effects of Icing?
Loss of lift, comms. thrust more weight flutter damage to turbines piston carb icing flight control reduced
What are 2 types of ice detection?
Visual and Electrical detection
What are the components of electronic detection?
strut,
probe into the wind, electronic microprocessor
heating element
How does electronic ice detection work?
microprocessor causes probe to vibrate at high frequency
more ice = less frequency = turn on warning light
What are the types of Anti-Ice systems?
Thermal
electric
Chemical
How does the thermal ice system work?
uses PNEUMATIC air flowing though PERFORATED AIR DUCT (piccolo) that prevent formation of ice
How is air supplied for piston and turbine engine for thermal ice system?
Piston = Combustion heaters
Turbines = Bleed air
How do electric anti-ice system work?
HEATING ELEMENTS EMBEDDED IN COMPONENT OR WRAP TO INCREASE SURFACE TEMPERATURE PREVENTING ICE FORMA
Electric anti-ice is limited to what and why?
small components because of high amp draw
What type of heating elements are used for Electric anti-ice?
resistive filament
transparent film
What is Electric anti-ice used for?
heat probes, wind screens, drains, plumbing
