Ice Condenser Flashcards

1
Q

Main Purpose of Ice Condenser

A

Limit peak pressure in containment following a DBA, LOCA, or a stem line break.

6-12 psig initial falling to 3-7 psig at 2 min

Ice Condenser Flowpath

A

Lower Containment, Lower Plenum, Ice bed section, Upper Plenum, Upper Containment, either drains to sump or air recirculated to lower containment by CEQ fans.

Q

Lower Plenum Contains?

A

turning vanes (directs air evenly across ice beds) and floor drains (direct melted ice to the recirc sump)

6
Q

Upper Plenum

A

Separates ice bed from upper containment and provides a passage for air to keep ice bed 15 degrees.

Intermediated deck doors lay closed on top of ice bed

7
Q

Does cold air flow across ice

A

no: air handling units circulate cold air in upper plenum down both walls of condenser and back.

8
Q

how does heat from the air handling units get removed?

A

glycol flows 6gpm to the air handlers around -5F inlet temp to keep air flow at 15cfm and 10F

Q

Air handler defrost cycle

A

fans and glycol supply shut off, defrost drain and pan energized to ensure draining, outlet backdraft damper closes due to distribution duct back pressure.

12
Q

How does sublimation effect the ice condenser

A

Ice sublimates to a vapor and deposits elsewhere in the condenser.

frost forms on lattice and cooling walls

causes loss of water content of ice

16
Q

what closes on phase A

A

CIV’s VCR-(10,11,21,20)

17
Q

what closes on lo-lo expansion tank

A

VCR-20, VSO-(20,21)

18
Q

Expanding glycol tank level indicates

A

increasing return temp
containment civ closure
glycol header crosstie

19
Q

times on condenser air cycle in run

A

40 min, AHU’s in defrost
5 min, the 4 AHU’s fans are off. (no indicating lights)
5 min, with all AHU’s in run

20
Q

What should you do when isolating an air handler package

A

vent both air handler units

21
Q

chiller package alarms and trips

A
High refrigerant pressure
low refrigerant pressure
compressor overload
low water flow
freeze protection
22
Q

Pump trips

A

low header pressure of 95 psig

23
Q

glycol effects/ first aid: swollowing

A

brain, kidney, liver damage (potentially fatal)

induce vomiting, call dr, get to emergency facility

24
Q

glycol effects/ first aid: eye contact

A

may cause minor eye irritation

irrigatethe eye immdiately for 5 min

25
Q

glycol effects inhalation

A

narcosis, nausea, and vomiting.
