Ice Condenser Flashcards
Main Purpose of Ice Condenser
Limit peak pressure in containment following a DBA, LOCA, or a stem line break.
6-12 psig initial falling to 3-7 psig at 2 min
Ice Condenser Flowpath
Lower Containment, Lower Plenum, Ice bed section, Upper Plenum, Upper Containment, either drains to sump or air recirculated to lower containment by CEQ fans.
Lower Plenum Contains?
turning vanes (directs air evenly across ice beds) and floor drains (direct melted ice to the recirc sump)
Ice Bed Section
Contains ice bed, lattice frame, support structure and ice baskets.
how many ice baskets at what temperature
1944 baskets, 96 degrees indicated on SG-7
Upper Plenum
Separates ice bed from upper containment and provides a passage for air to keep ice bed 15 degrees.
Intermediated deck doors lay closed on top of ice bed
Does cold air flow across ice
no: air handling units circulate cold air in upper plenum down both walls of condenser and back.
how does heat from the air handling units get removed?
glycol flows 6gpm to the air handlers around -5F inlet temp to keep air flow at 15cfm and 10F
Air handler defrost cycle
fans and glycol supply shut off, defrost drain and pan energized to ensure draining, outlet backdraft damper closes due to distribution duct back pressure.
air handler components
30 handlers with (2 fans and a glycol heat exchanger) each. electric heaters on all packages
What is sublimation
Solid to a gas
How does sublimation effect the ice condenser
Ice sublimates to a vapor and deposits elsewhere in the condenser.
frost forms on lattice and cooling walls
causes loss of water content of ice
Purpose of glycol expansion tank
provides expansion volume for glycol on containment return header
where does the glycol expansion tank overflow to
CWHUT via the ice condenser fan cooler unit drain pot
what isolates containment glycol
Phase A and Lo-Lo level on expansion tank
