Q

What is auto-PEEP?

A

Air stacking

In those with COPD, the airways collapse due to loss of elasticity. The air that is pushed into their alveoli will not escape. This leads to increased intrathoracic pressure which can decrease preload.

Q

How can you prevent auto-PEEP?

A

There are a couple ways:
•Decrease the RR to allow for longer expiration.
•Increase inspiratory flow to allow for longer expiration.
•Decrease the I:E ratio.
