Describe the Rome III criteria for Dxing IBS.
1) Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort occuring at least 3 days per month in the last 3 months associated w/ 2 or more of the following:
a) Improvement in pain/discomfort w/ defecation
b) Onset of pain/discomfort associated w/ change in stool frequency
c) Onset of pain/discomfort associated w/ change in stool consistency
Talk about the treatment for IBS.
No cure all drug, bc IBS is a spectrum disorder comprising many different symptoms.
Can treat individual symptoms, but don’t be surprised when disorder is refractory to tx.
Can treat w/ tricyclic antideppressants (not in constipation) and SSRIs (not in diarrhea) to lessen perceived pain at doses less than those used to tx depression.
When treating IBS, it is paramount that you maintain a good _____-_______ relationship to ensure trust and cooperation.
