What is IBS?
A
Abdominal symptoms with no set cause.

Presentation/criteria of IBS?
A
Recurrent Abdominal Pain + 2 of:
Constipation/Diarrhoea (may alternate), altered stools + pain relief on defecation.

Investigating IBS?
A
EXCLUSION of other conditions
1) Bloods
2) Auto-antibody screen - negative
3) Faecal calprotectin - negative

Medical Management of IBS?
A
Symptomatic management:
Loperamide (diarrhoea), Laxatives (constipation), painkillers.
Severe: SSRIs/TCAs e.g. amitriptyline 5-10mg OD
