Canada, Northern Europe, America
*higher in Northern latitudes than Southern
Which populations have greater instances of IBD?
-Greater in Jewish (Ashkenazi descent) compared to non-jewish
-Caucasian > hispanic, AA, Asian
Is UC more common in men or women?
Men
Is Crohns (CD) more common in men or women?
Women
Age of onset for IBD?
15-35 years (but can occur at any age)
-> possible second peak at >55 y/o
Incidence of IBD is highest in _____ countries, and lowest in ______ regions?
Highest: developed countries
Lowest: developing regions
DDX for IBD?
Colorectal cancer, IBS, Infectious/ischemic/radiation colitis, Microscopic colitis, Amebiasis, med side effects, Pseudomembranous colitis (C. diff), Toxic megacolon, Appendicitis, Celiac, Bacterial overgrowth
What is ulcerative colitis (UC)?
Chronic inflammatory condition characterized by relapsing and remitting episodes of inflammation (ulcers) to the mucosal (mucosa/submucosa) layer of the large intestine (colon)
*almost always involves the rectum
Pattern of UC?
Circumferential and continuous:
-usually starts distally at rectum & extends proximally in continuous pattern to involve other parts of the colon
As UC becomes chronic, the colon loses haustral markings lading to what type of appearance?
Lead pipe appearance of colon (seen on Barium enema)
