Q

The handling bleed valves are sprung loaded open, to ensure they are already open on start. How are they operated?

A

The EEC will close the bleed valves at the correct time during
acceleration. The bleed valve is closed by the EEC, which energizes
the solenoid control valve. Energizing the solenoid control valve vents the P3 servo air from the
opening chamber of the bleed valve, and the valve will move to the
closed position.

Q

How is the No. 4 bearing pressure controlled and what role does the two-position scavenge valve play in this process?

A

A two-position scavenge valve adjusts accordingly to maintain seal pressure differentials and reduce vent air loss.
- Spring-loaded valve allows maximum flow at low power.
- Low flow during high power is achieved by stage 10 HPC air.

Q

What are the main components of the Compressor Airflow Control System?

A

-Booster Stage Bleed Valve (BSBV): Unloads the booster during low power engine operation and prevents stall.
-Variable Stator Vanes (VSV): Adjust the angle of the stator vanes in the high-pressure compressor to optimize airflow and prevent compressor stall during various phases of engine operation.
-Handling Bleed Valves (HBV): Bleed off excess air from the high-pressure compressor stages to manage pressure and temperature, preventing surge and maintaining stable operation.
