Hypoxia Flashcards
Name the 4 types of hypoxia?
- Hypoxic hypoxia
- Anaemic hypoxia
- Ischaemic hypoxia
- Histotoxic
Define Hypoxia
Hypoxia is when there is lack of oxygen to tissues.
3 mins with out oxygen and brain damage is likely
What is Hypoxic hypoxia?
The ability to take in oxygen is impaired eg altitude, enclosed compartment, gas filled atmosphere, asthma,
What is Anaemic hypoxia?
Haemoglobin problem - oxygen carrying capacity of the blood is decreased.
What is Ischaemic hypoxia?
Lack of blood flow, hence lack delivery of oxygenated blood to cells.
Could be due to trauma ie shock
What is histotoxic hypoxia?
When a toxic substance interferes with the ability of tissues to use oxygen.
eg cyanide poisoning prevents cells from using oxygen
Name 4 signs of hypoxia?
Signs
- Hyperventilation (tachypnoea)
- Cyanosis
- Confusion
- Muscular dysfunction
Name 4 symptoms of hypoxia?
Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Air hunger
- Sight impairment
